There are many services available through our website that we hope you will find useful. There are links to grants and resources, CalServe's service learning curriculum and upcoming events. You will also find information about what service learning is and how to develop quality projects. Please bookmark our site and visit it often, as we are constantly adding new information.

Project Serve has been a National Service Learning Leader School for the past four years and has much experience in the realm of service learning for nine years. We have connections to many catagorical programs and community partners. So, if you have any specific questions, please respond back to our program through our web site or call Project Serve at Eureka High School (707) 441-0271.

What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is a teaching methodology that:

      *    It is a method whereby students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community identified by youth;
      *    It is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institutions of higher education, or community service programs, and with the community;
      *    It helps foster civic responsibility;
      *    It is integrated into and enhances the curriculum of the students;
      *    It provides structured time for the students to reflect on the service and evaluate the activity.

Seven Elements of Service Learning

Our Vision for Top of the State Service Learning Regional Network is to promote and sustain service learning by encouraging schools to embed service learning into their curricula. We believe service learning is a teaching tool for students to learn content standards and to gain an awareness of their civic responsibility.

Our Mission is to promote academic excellence through the teaching strategy of service learning. The Top of the State Service Learning Regional Network spreads the word of service learning to more than 150 schools throughout three counties on the north coast of California.

Our Goals:
    * To increase service learning in the northern area of Region 1 so that students are engaged in at least one service learning opportunity at each grade span.

* To promote and sustain service learning by encouraging schools to embed service learning in their curricula.

* To encourage service learning projects that promotes character education, civic engagement and community involvement.

* To develop an organizational structure to sustain service learning for Region 1.

* To support the implementation of service learning by providing schools, parents and community organizations with in-service and training opportunities.
